"Princess. Unikitty. What the heck is a unikitty?" Before he could get an answer though the side of the dumpster started dripping, and Metabee leapt back behind where she was standing.
"Ok, can you make another one of those light screen things? Maybe now!"
Her first impulse was to answer his first question, but fortunately the second, more important one registered before she could get too thoroughly distracted. "Yeah!" She gave a quick nod and tossed up another screen, this one a curved shield that deflected the next burst of acid, redirecting it to spray around them.
"So should I just keep this up? 'Cuz I can do that for maybe twenty more seconds!" Though the centipede's continued attacks would probably make that harder.
"Oh, yeah! But-" She paused briefly, pouring more energy into the shield as it threatened to dim. The centipede seemed to be trying to get closer to them, legs scrabbling against the sides of the surrounding buildings.
"But I should probably get closer," she continued. "I mean I could throw something, but I'm not very good at that."
"Well of course I can see that, silly goose! But I can't do anything from here." Speaking of which - the shield was flickering and dimming dangerously, threatening to vanish at any moment.
This really was bad, no doubt about that- but no way, she wasn't gonna think that way (no matter how true it was). She spun to face Metabee, one hand still extended to hold what remained of the shield in place. "Okay, any ideas? We can do this, we just have to do something fast!"
Metabee was not good at plans. He kind of depended on Longclaw or Mockingjay or that. Usually he got by just firing lasers at stuff. He looked through the shield at the centipede, and past it at the increasingly damaged buildings. Well, not like he could make it much worse.
"Just drop the shield, ok" he ordered, changing his stance and getting ready to fire some seeker missiles at the thing.
"You got it!" The shield flickered out of existence and Peony stepped to the side; whatever Metabee was going to do, she wanted to make sure he had a clear shot. She was certainly ready to help out if necessary, though.
As soon as the shield was down Metabee fired. The pair of seeker missiles went flying toward the centipede, and he had a moment to consider that heat seeking missiles wouldn't work on an insect as he grabbed Unikitty's hand and dragged her behind the remains of the dumpster. Luckily at this range it didn't matter, and the resulting explosion sent heat and smoke tearing past their hiding place.
Peony clasped her hands over her ears and squeezed her eyes shut as the missiles detonated on the other side of the dumpster; as the explosion subsided, she turned and peered over the top at the target.
The centipede was wriggling awkwardly on the ground, cracked exoskeleton dropping off in chunks, but it was still very much alive - and, as she watched, it managed to regain its footing, unleashing an enraged screech in the two Trailblazers' general direction.
Peony ducked back behind the dumpster. "That almost worked!" she exclaimed brightly. It was only slightly forced.
Metabee glanced around the dumpster, his expression clear frustration.
"ALMOST! Almost isn't good enough!" He snapped back, trying to figure out what to do next. The buildings didn't look like they could handle another blast, but if that didn't move soon that things was going to be heading for them. And it would be a lot harder to take down if it got loose again.
"We can do this!" she repeats - the tinge of doubt in her voice seems to have settled in to stay, but that doesn't mean she's going to admit to being worried. There is a legitimate bright side here, though.
"I mean, it's not actually dead yet, yeah, but a bunch of its shell cracked! If we-" She pauses to throw up another shield; as out-of-it as it may be, the centipede is back to spewing the occasional burst of acid. "-if we could get it where the shell's gone we could do more, we can take this thing!"
